Planning for Visitors

Visiting parents, friends and relatives are always welcome at the Umbra Institute. And of course we fully appreciate the students’ desire to dedicate time to friends and relatives who make the long journey and visit them during the semester. However, students at Umbra are also required to respect our academic policies and faithfully attend and participate in all classes, course field trips and excursions, exams, and other co-curricular class activities and events. Therefore each semester Umbra provides a week-long break, usually just after mid-term exams, during which time no classes are held. This way students can travel independently, as well as dedicate time to friends and relatives who visit without having to worry about missing any portion of the academic program.

We kindly ask all parents, relatives, and friends to visit during the break or arrange long weekend visits (most students have Fridays free) so as not to interfere with your students’ responsibility to participate fully in the Umbra courses. Unfortunately, students cannot be excused from class or class-related activities simply to spend time with visiting friends and/or relatives. If you do visit Perugia, and we certainly hope that you will, please try to have a minimal impact on the students academic responsibilities.

In order to help coordinate travel, listed below you’ll find a list of dates when classes will not be in session.

Spring 2012

February 27-March 2, Mon-Fri

Fall 2012
October 19-28, Fri-Sun

Please note that students attending either the Università di Perugia or the Università per Stranieri do not have the same breaks as those doing traditional Umbra Institute programs.

Various local hotels offer discounts for Umbra students and their families.  (See the travel section under ”Current Students” for more details.)

Perugia’s fine art, ancient Etruscan history, and jazzy flare makes for a fabulous getaway year-round.  Centrally located in Umbria, the city provides a great base for day trips to other picturesque towns in the region such as Assisi, Orvieto and Spoleto.  With Tuscany just a short distance away, travelers may conveniently visit Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, or  Cortona, a charming town recently catapulted into the spotlight by the book and the movie Under the Tuscan Sun.
