Thousands of young men and women have studied at the Umbra Institute since its inaugural semester in Fall 2000 and have been impacted by their study abroad experience in some way or another. At the Umbra Institute, we aim to foster a sense of community among our many alumni around the world by supporting their professional endeavors, keeping in touch with UmbrAmbassadors, organizing events and reunions, and staying updated with alumni accomplishments over the years.
Alumni Support: Apply Study Abroad to Real Life!
After a life-changing and valuable study abroad experience, students return home with a newly gained knowledge, skills, and outlook that employers are looking for to hire. For that reason, we offer an International Experience Career Workshop for students before their departure as part of our re-entry support. During this workshop, we provoke students to articulate their new-found intercultural competence, linguistic skills, and academic and volunteer experience into coherent and meaningful stories, and help them integrate this in their résumés.
For those interested in receiving advice about careers or graduate degrees in the international education field, our knowledgeable staff is available! Contact Aurora at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Download our career workbook, “Unpacking Your International Experience“.
Every semester, students leave the Umbra Institute having had an amazing and unforgettable experience. They return home with new gained skills and a different perspective on life. To see what they have been up to since their study abroad experience and understand how their time abroad has played a larger role in their lives, we caught up with a few of our alumni. Check out what they had to say and what advice they had to give to those interested in their own abroad experience at Umbra on our Featured Alumni page.

The Umbra Institute offers Ambassadorships to select alumni. Ambassadors are chosen through an on-site application process, qualifying if they have studied for at least a whole semester, are in good academic standing, and are prepared to commit several hours for at least one semester. Ambassadors are required to participate in one or more school events at their home institution – such as a study abroad fair – and refer two students to the institute. By keeping in touch with Umbra staff, they have the chance to tell their personal stories, describe Umbra’s offerings, plan exciting events, conduct Umbra-sponsored coffee hours, and participate in online informational sessions.
