SUMMARY:Umbra Optional Trip: Tuscany!
DESCRIPTION:Tuscany boasts some of the most tantalizing landscapes in the world. Its scenic brilliance is matched only by the many medieval walled towns\, renaissance architecture and countless works of art in Siena and the surrounding region.     Friday - Depart Perugia for a guided excursion to medieval Siena and the piazza del campo (pictured). You'll arrive later that afternoon at a charming Tuscan farmhouse near legendary San Gimignano\, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.That evening\, you'll enjoy a homecooked\, multi-course Tuscan feast at the traditional farmhouse.     Saturday - Explore the town of San Gimignano or just relax at the farmhouse in the pool and enjoy the scenic view. If you go into town\, make sure to grab a gelato at the Gelateria di Piazza! Is ice cream has been eaten by everyone from Tony Blair to the Pope -- make sure you check out the pictures on the wall! SUMMARY:Umbra Gelato Night
DESCRIPTION:  Come enjoy some gelato\, on Umbra\, and get to know your fellow Umbra students a little better. What's the difference between gelato and ice cream\, you ask? There are a couple: one\, gelato is made with a different ratio of whole milk to cream\, so instead of the 10% fat that ice cream contains\, gelato usually contains around 6-7%\, allowing the flavors to be tasted more intensely. In addition\, it's whipped very slowly and then folded repeatedly in the gelateria before being smeared (not scooped in balls) onto the cone. Yum!

SUMMARY:Food Studies Conference
DESCRIPTION:  The Umbra Institute has announced a conference on the history and culture of Italian food to be held on June 8 and 9\, 2012. Since the beginning of the course The History and Culture of Food in Italy eight years ago\, food studies at the Umbra Institute have always been more than just the typical “food&wine” courses. Food at Umbra is a rigorous academic pursuit\, one which lies at the intersection of society\, the state\, and the market.     Building on the success of this inaugural semester of the Food Studies Program\, the Institute has organized an international conference for scholars who use food as a lens to analyze larger cultural and political trends. The conference’s theme\, “Italian Food: Fact & Fiction\,” seeks to examine the last one hundred and fifty years of Italian history from various perspectives.     The Food Conference will host over fifty professors from as far as the Australia\, Israel\, and the United States. SUMMARY:Food Studies Program Capstone Trip
DESCRIPTION:The centerpiece of the four-credit option\, this overnight trip includes stops at four different production facilities. One is a family-run business (balsamic vinegar)\, the second two are cooperatives (parmesan cheese and prosciutto di Parma) and the fourth is Barilla\, the pasta giant. DESCRIPTION:Prof. Simon Young's History and Culture of Food in Italy course goes to Florence today to see the San Miniato a Monte church above the legendary Piazzale Michaelangelo and then\, after strolling across the city\, to dine on "modern medieval cuisine" at the Pentola d'Oro.     Itinerary   8:45am: Departure from Perugia (P.za Italia) by bus  11:00am: Arrival in Florence (Piazzale Michaelangelo)  1:00pm: Lunch at the Pentola d'Oro (Via di Mezzo\, 24)  4:00-4:30pm: Finish lunch and head for the bus.     If anyone wants to stay in Florence after the trip is over\, you're welcome to. SUMMARY:Umbra Optional Trip: Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri, and Naples!
DESCRIPTION:     Umbra Students head down south to an area by the Amalfi coast\, one of the most spectacularly beautiful parts of Italy.     Friday – Depart Perugia early and arrive in Pompeii for a guided tour of the ancient city before heading to Sorrento for a relaxing evening.     Saturday – Take a ferry ride over to the isle of Capri for a full-day excursion at leisure and return to Sorrento in the evening. Walk and explore the island with its towering rocky cliffs and beautiful island seascape. Visit the villages of Capri and Anacapri or take an optional boating excursion to the famous “Grotta Azzurra” (Blue Grotto).     Sunday – Depart Sorrento in the morning for a guided excursion of the major sites in the ever-Italian city of Naples. SUMMARY:Sorrento Optional Trip
DESCRIPTION:     Umbra Students head down south to an area by the Amalfi coast\, one of the most spectacularly beautiful parts of Italy.     Friday – Depart Perugia early and arrive in Pompeii for a guided tour of the ancient city before heading to Sorrento for a relaxing evening.     Saturday – Take a ferry ride over to the isle of Capri for a full-day excursion at leisure and return to Sorrento in the evening. Walk and explore the island with its towering rocky cliffs and beautiful island seascape. Visit the villages of Capri and Anacapri or take an optional boating excursion to the famous “Grotta Azzurra” (Blue Grotto).     Sunday – Depart Sorrento in the morning for a guided excursion of the major sites in the ever-Italian city of Naples. After lunch\, return to Perugia in the late afternoon.     Cost of trip: 300 Euro     This package includes roundtrip transportation (private coach\, ferry to and from Capri)\, tour guides in Pompeii and Naples\, entrance fee to Pompeii ruins\, as well as two nights at a 4-star hotel in Sorrento\, including dinner and breakfast on both days.     If you are interested in signing up for this trip\, you may do so upon your arrival in Perugia.  For questions or more information\, contact Regina Tingle at rtingle@umbra.org.  Please note that once you sign up for the trip\, refunds or cancellations may not be available.
