Personal
Charles Jarvis is Professor of History Emeritus from Dickinson College (Pa.) and former Director of the Umbra Institute. Until 2004 he taught courses in History and American Foreign Policy for thirty years, during which time he was three-time Director of the Dickinson College K. Robert Nillson Center for European Study in Bologna, Italy. In 1996 he was Visiting Professor at the University of Malaga in Spain. In 2005 he became Director of Umbra Institute and is pleased to return, now retired, to teach in an institution that he has had a major role in shaping.
Philosophy of Teaching
My goal is to help students find their place and potential, and to prepare them for a life of learning. Hopefully, my teaching helps them achieve a base of knowledge about their past and equip them with critical thinking and communication skills upon which they can build and apply to their lives in the future.
