Michael Chiariello, Ph.D.

Boston University

Courses Taught at Umbra
I will be teaching “Medicine, Ethics, and Law” in Spring, 2012.

Credentials
Professor of Philosophy, St. Bonaventure University.
A.B., Manhattan College; A.M. and Ph.D., Boston University.

Teaching Philosophy
The best education is one that erases the boundary between teaching and learning. As Karl Popper says, “I may be wrong and you may be right, and by an effort we may get nearer to the truth.” This applies equally to student and teacher.

What students should bring to the Umbra Experience
An open mind, an open heart, and a hearty appetite.

Memorable Teaching Moments
My most rewarding experiences as a professor come long after a student has left my class. It’s when I hear from former students, years later, and find that I have somehow managed to contribute to their lives in ways I hadn’t ever intended. I’m both surprised, and somehow honored by this.
