Penn State University
Spring 16 Ambassador
Ciao amici! My name is Ali Huerta, and I am from Orange County, California. I’m currently a student at Penn State University, going into my senior year. I study Environmental Science, with a minor in Water and Watershed Resources. Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine. While sifting through my options, Perugia always stuck out in my mind. It offered tons of different courses, opportunities to engage in the community, and actually required me to take (and use) Italian! I always wanted to learn a new language, and what better chance to learn it than while living within Italy and surrounded by Italian culture?
My incredibly diverse courses included Sustainability, History and Culture of Food in Italy, Business of Wine, and Archaeological Discoveries! These were some of the most intriguing courses I have ever taken during my college career. The community engagement within my courses was one of my favorite parts! We were able to work alongside the local high school in tackling the worldwide issue of food waste, work with the museums in translating guides, and were given many wine and food tastings, helping us to integrate even more into Perugian lifestyle! Studying in Perugia has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. The tight knit community of Perugia really makes this place feel at home. I have not only made friends within the close community of Umbra, but I have made many friends with the locals of Perugia by practicing my Italian with the baristas, waiters, or even at weekly tandem nights! Seeing friendly faces everywhere you go around town truly makes this fairytale-like town even more of a place to call home. I really hope more students get the opportunity to experience Perugia, as it truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
