University of Vermont
Spring 16 Ambassador
My name is Meg Davidow and I am a student in the Food and Sustainability Studies Program here at Umbra. I come from the University of Vermont, another school that values sustainability and local food culture. It is so comforting to be in an artsy mountain town that has a vibrant music scene, as it reminds so much of home. However, Perugia is nothing like anywhere I’ve ever been before! This place is so special and once you open your heart to it, you will never see things though the same eyes. I am so happy I decided to come to Perugia over a big city like Rome or Florence, because I feel like I’m getting so much more of an authentic experience here. It’s so nice to walk home from class and get hugs and kisses from the lady who sells ceramics, the barber, the man who works in the family owned grocery store! My biggest piece of advice is definitely to meet as many locals as you can! Step out of your comfort zone! Practice your Italian at the bars, go see some jazz with friends at places that Americans don’t usually frequent, and have a night where you cook an authentic Italian meal. I have met friends from all over the world here- from England, to Japan, Macedonia, and of course many Italians from all over Italy’s beautiful regions. These are friends that I will have for the rest of my life and I am already eagerly awaiting the day I get to come back here!! Italy will forever be in my heart- it’s people, it’s food, and it’s warm culture have changed me forever for the better.
