Ciao! My name is Megan Mulvaney and I’m from Long Island, New York. I’m majoring in psychology at Saint Michael’s College in Burlington, Vermont.
I always knew I wanted to study abroad, it was just a matter of where. After hearing my Italian professor at SMC talk about his home I knew Italy was where I wanted to go. Perugia is perfect. It’s authentic and smaller, which makes it easier to explore every little side street and for it to really feel like home. By the end of the semester, you’re familiar with the people around town. You start to feel like a local. Not to mention that when you live in a historic hilltop city you never quite get used to the beauty that always surrounds you. At Umbra, I took Intensive Intermediate Italian, History and Culture of Food, Contemporary Italy, and Community-Based Research in Psychology. Every class is extremely rewarding because not only are you learning about Italy in the classroom, you get to experience it in everyday life. There are so many aspects to studying abroad that are worthwhile. The food, of course, is amazing. Getting to speak Italian with local students and shop owners was also a great experience. It was comforting that Italians are very encouraging when it comes to learning their language! I’ve loved making new friends and enjoying and immersing myself in Italian culture, as well as traveling around Italy. My advice is to see as much of Italy as you can, but don’t forget about your home in Perugia!
