The Umbra Institute is pleased to offer a new 3-week Maymester program designed specifically for students interested in a short-term study abroad experience while earning transferable credits (4 credits total), exploring the impressive legacy of Italian history and art. Topics include a brief history of the Roman empire with emphasis on its artistic and architectural accomplishments, the Middle Ages, and the early and high Renaissance . The program combines classroom lectures with various day and overnight visits to Assisi, Siena, Pompeii, Rome, Naples, and Florence (see below for details). The Maymester can be taken as a precursor to summer sessions in the US.

AHIS 350: An Italian Journey: History and Art from Rome to the Renaissance

Course Description

This course offers both a theoretical and experiential survey of major historical events, figures and artistic accomplishments that shaped Italy as the world’s richest concentration of cultural experience. Students will follow the steps of successive civilizations and discover the most astonishing examples of their presence: monumental Rome and daily life in Pompeii, the flourishing of medieval spirituality in Tuscany and Umbria, finally the revival of a classical artistic style in Florence with the masters of the Renaissance Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. The program consists of classroom lectures, on-site learning with visits to Perugia, Assisi, Siena, Pompeii, Rome, Naples, and Florence.
