Welcome ASU students! Every semester ASU students take advantage of the Umbra Institute’s incredible location in Perugia, Italy to complete courses that count towards their majors, all while studying abroad and living in the real Italy. While the courses are engaging, students also have ample time on the weekend to travel elsewhere in Europe. Are you ready to experience Perugia for yourself?
Extensive Course Selection. ASU students must take an Italian language class and three or four other electives. Elective courses are taught in English, so no Italian language proficiency is required. Courses are twice a week and most of them include field-trips. You will no attend classes on Friday so you can have time to travel when you don’t have a scheduled class field-trip. The semesters are from September to December, and from January to April. The Summer Session has two options: the general studies runs from the last week in May to the end of June; the intensive Italian language through culture program runs for 6 weeks from the last week in May through July.

Live like an Italian: Learn to appreciate the Italian lifestyle. Umbra provides students with shared apartments within a 5-minute walk of the Institute, allowing for innumerable opportunities to enjoy mid-day siestas, eat a panino on the fountain steps, and walk the city center like a native. There is no meal plan, but apartments are furnished with full kitchens so that you can try to duplicate your favorite new Italian dish. WiFi is provided both within the Institute and in each student apartment. Lastly, Umbra provides several activities during your semester to give you the opportunity to socialize and meet locals. (Check out some of the student activities offered at Umbra.)
It’s possible! Our selection of courses allows almost every major to study abroad. There’s no language requirement–since our courses are taught in English–but since the language is important, you’ll take an Italian language class as well.

“My favorite part of studying in Perugia was the lifestyle, and being in the Food and Sustainability Studies Program made my experience abroad even better. The courses helped me understand why Italians are the way they are with their food, made me appreciate every single bite I took of delicious Italian cuisine, and raised my consciousness about the way I shopped for food.”

“My ultimate goal for study abroad was to fully immerse myself into the culture and “do as the Italians do.” Perugia seemed to be the perfect place to do that, and I was definitely not wrong!”

“When I saw that the Umbra Institute offered home-stays, I was in; and those four months staying with an Italian family in Perugia stands out as the best experience I had. It’s an entirely different society in Perugia – one that welcomes and encourages learning of all kinds.”
