Conn College SATA in Italy
Study European history in Italy — Spring 2016
Interested in studying abroad? Next year Connecticut College Professor Frederick Paxton will lead a group of students to Perugia, an Italian hilltown for a SATA. All coursework will be taught in English, except for Italian language courses. Students of all majors are encouraged to apply to this interdisciplinary program. Professor Paxton will offer two courses:
History 232 The Later Middle Ages: Christians, Muslims and Jews
History 3XX Perugia, Etruria and the Deep History of Italy
Students are required to take a total of 15-16 credits: at least one of Professor Paxton’s courses, an Italian language course (levels vary from introductory to advanced), and one to two additional courses offered by the host institution (and Connecticut College partner), the Umbra Institute.
See a sample list of courses here.
A Big University Town in a Small Italian City. Conn students will take advantage of the Umbra Institute’s beautiful location in historic Perugia, Italy, to complete courses that count towards their majors, all while studying abroad and living in the real Italy. Perugia is a beautiful hilltop town with two universities: it’s a big university town in a small Italian city. Students will also have ample time on the weekend to travel elsewhere in Europe because no classes are held on Fridays. Thus, students have a three-day weekend.
Student Life. Each semester the Umbra Institute hosts between 80 and 100 American and Italian college students from colleges and universities across the U.S., in addition to 10 Italian students from the University of Perugia. Housing is provided for all students in shared apartments within a 5-minute walk of the Institute. Apartments are furnished with full kitchens and have WiFi access. (Check out some of the student activities offered at Umbra.)

“Studying abroad in Perugia gave me an amazing opportunity to experience the essence of Italian culture and life. I acquired a depth of knowledge and love for this little boot-shaped country that I could not have received in any type of formal instruction. Through an internship at a Montessori high school, I learned about the day-to-day lives of Italians. Studying abroad was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and something everyone should experience!”
