Rutgers Summer Program in Italy
Study food in Central Italy — Summer 2014
This summer Rutgers’ Eric Sarmiento will be teaching a course called “The Sense of Taste.“The class will be taught in English, so no Italian language proficiency is required. The classes are held in Perugia, in central Italy, at the Umbra Institute. Class is twice a week with several field trips to nearby cities, with no classes on Friday. The Summer Session runs from the last week in May to the end of June.
A Big University Town in a Small Italian City. Rutgers students will take advantage of the Umbra Institute’s incredible location in Perugia, Italy, to complete courses that count towards their majors, all while studying abroad and living in the real Italy. While the courses will be engaging, students will also have ample time on the weekend to travel elsewhere in Europe.Students can either take just this class or can choose another course from the elective courses offered at Umbra for a small extra charge. See a list of standard summer courses here: Summer 2017 course offerings.
Student Life. Each summer the Umbra Institute hosts between 80 and 100 American and Italian college students from colleges and universities across the U.S. and in Perugia. Housing is provided for all students in shared apartments within a 5-minute walk of the Institute. Apartments are furnished with full kitchens and have WiFi access. “My 4 months in Italy was the best of my life. Perugia is by far the best place to study abroad…Rome, Florence, all nice for weekend or day trips. If you want true Italian, Perugia is the place to be. The small city is beautiful-and you get a chance to know everyone in town from the people that work at your favorite bar to the grocery store. The night life is great and so are the people. Since it is a college town there are many students–from Americans and Italians to Spaniards and Greek– and many more nationalities, Perugia is the perfect place to study, go out, meet amazing people, and go amazing places.”

“Coming from Rutgers, with a student population of about 30,000, Perugia offered the opportunity to be more than just a number. As any person who has studied abroad can tell you, it is an experience that will be an integral part of life because when you are away from everything you know you become who you really are. fter my semester, I categorized my life into two parts ,BP and AP, Before Perugia and After Perugia. Now I am receiving my Master’s degree abroad and my extraordinary experience in Perugia has a lot to do with why I wanted to chase the happiness I felt there.”

“In two short months, I created memories and friendships to last a lifetime all thanks to a smaller Italian city, Perugia. This small city provides you a chance to interact with the locals, taste the delicious food, and fall in love with the Italian lifestyle. Perugia, located in central Italy, also allows for easy day and weekend trips by train to explore the whole country in only a few hours. Choose the Umbra Institute and Perugia, and I promise you will never regret it!”
