By studying at the Umbra Institute, students are given the opportunity to enroll in 12-17 credits.
A Big University Town in a Small Italian City. Classes are held in Perugia, in central Italy, at the Umbra Institute. Students choosing to focus their studies on psychology will take advantage of the Institute’s beautiful location to complete courses relative to psychology studies, while experiencing the relaxed pace of Perugia’s historic town center. Perugia’s town center is inhabited primarily by Italian and international students attending one of the local universities, giving students the chance to forge lasting friendships with a multicultural crowd.
Live like an Italian: Learn to appreciate the Italian lifestyle. Umbra provides students with shared apartments within a 5-minute walk of the Institute, allowing for innumerable opportunities to enjoy mid-day siestas, eat a panino on the fountain steps, and walk the city center like a native. There is no meal plan, but apartments are furnished with full kitchens so that you can try to duplicate your favorite new Italian dish. WiFi is provided both within the Institute and in each student apartment. Lastly, Umbra provides several activities during your semester to give you the opportunity to socialize and meet locals.
It’s possible! Our selection of courses allows almost every major to study abroad. There’s no language requirement–since our courses are taught in English–but since the language is important, you’ll take an Italian language class as well.

“Deciding to study abroad in Perugia has been one of the greatest decisions I have ever made in my undergraduate career. My “Education in Italy” seminar and practicum gave me the opportunity to teach English as a second language to local fourth and fifth grade students in Perugia, every week. In addition, Umbra not only provides students with a plethora of interesting courses with enthusiastic professors, but they also provide a multitude of extracurricular activities, such as volunteering for UNICEF.”

“While in Perugia, in my Critical Disabilities class, I worked alongside several of my classmates at an after school program for disabled youth. Despite language and cultural barriers, we were able to teach these children how to play some of our favorite sports. In my Human Development class, we went to a school to teach children about American cultural concepts and visited a rehabilitation center. The classes I took at Umbra really allowed me to immerse myself in the culture of the city. “

“I study Psychology and, while at Umbra, I took Human Development in Culture and the Critical Disabilities Seminar and Practicum. What I love most about the program is that they push for students to be members of the community; all of my classes had community engagement aspects to them. My study abroad experience has taught me how to adapt to an unfamiliar environment and embrace cultural differences. I will always think of the Umbra community as my second home! “
