Franciscan Studies Courses – Spring Only
Perugia is the capital of Umbria, sometimes referred to as the land of Saint Francis and his followers. Assisi, the birthplace and home of St. Francis is located only a few kilometers away, clearly visible on the mountainside from any vantage point in the city. Perugia is in the heartland of Saint Francis – and its difficult to think of a more appropriate and inspirational backdrop for in-depth studies of Francis, his followers, and the Franciscan heritage and tradition.
The Umbra Institute, in cooperation with Saint Bonaventure University, and the Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities is pleased to announce the establishment of Franciscan studies curriculum, which will begin in the spring semester 2007. The inaugural semester will offer one Franciscan course; in future spring semesters up to two courses will be offered under this program.
The Umbra Institute will welcome visiting and local scholars to offer a variety of courses in Franciscan history, theology, philosophy, literature, ethics, tradition and more. Given our ideal location, all Franciscan courses are designed for significant on-site learning for a truly inspirational educational experience with class visits to the many sites in Assisi, La Verna, Greccio, Rome and other sites of interest.
In Spring 2012 our visiting scholar is Dr. Michael Chiariello from Saint Bonaventure University (SBU). Dr. Chiariello has been a professor of Philosophy for over 35 years, and Dean of SBU’s Clare College from 2000-2006. Dr. Chiariello will be teaching:
PHME 390: Medicine, Ethics and Law: An International Perspective – 3 cr.
An interdisciplinary examination of contemporary global issues from diverse perspectives with special consideration given to the place of Franciscan ideals and values.
For additional course information, see Spring Courses or request a detailed syllabus.
Courses are open to all Umbra participants. Students from Franciscan institutions (see list below) must enroll in the Franciscan studies course above, in an Italian language course (4 credits), and two or more electives.
