Fall 2018 Umbra Institute Weekend Excursion
GEMS OF TUSCANY
San Gimignano and Siena
In Fall 2018, Umbra will be running its semester weekend excursion to the worldwide known region of Tuscany. The trip includes visits to San Gimignano and Siena, two of UNESCO’s World Heritage towns .
With its unique skyline, San Gimignano, often referred to as the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages,” is one of the most iconic destinations in Italy. However, San Gimignano is not only known for its towers, but also for its incredible frescoes, the medieval streets, and the surrounding landscape.
Siena, which rivaled Florence in the arts for centuries, is a perfectly preserved medieval town. It is famous for the Palio, a horse race that takes place twice a year in Piazza del Campo, one of the most extraordinary squares in the world.
