Other Teaching Opportunities

Teaching Opportunities at Umbra

Does the idea of teaching in a 16th century Renaissance palazzo sound appealing? Do you cherish the thought of taking your students to see the ruins of a Roman road… right next door? The Umbra Institute provides a world of opportunity for its faculty members, starting with the chance to teach in one of Italy’s most historically and culturally rich cities.

Umbra offers courses in art history, international business and economics, Italian studies, literature, history, political science, psychology, visual arts, writing, and other disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Most courses are taught in English, a select few are conducted in Italian, yet all are developed to explore a common curricular element: Italy. Whenever possible, the material learned in class is supplemented by on-site study in Perugia, Umbria, and other destinations in Italy with an emphasis on community engagement.

Adjunct Positions & Course Proposals
The Umbra Institute is continually seeking to diversify its curriculum and offer new and exciting courses. Requests for teaching positions from qualified instructors are welcomed, and applicants are encouraged to submit new course proposals they feel would enrich and enhance the Umbra curriculum. Professors from U.S. colleges and universities on sabbatical, extended leave, or those interested in teaching a course with students from their home institution are encouraged to apply, as well as qualified instructors in or near Perugia.

How to Apply
First, fill out this form with your information and a curriculum vitae with references. Indicate the semesters you are available and, if applicable, indicate the course(s) you would like to teach and/or course proposal(s) you feel are consistent with the Umbra program. Click here for the teaching application form.

Conditions
A Ph.D. or Ph.D. candidate status is preferred for professors of all subjects, while a Ph.D. is required for certain disciplines. An MFA is required for all studio art courses. Employment decisions are made based upon the applicant’s qualifications and education, ability to perform the responsibilities of the position, and his or her level of commitment to teaching, particularly in Italy. All instructors are initially hired for adjunct positions; the Umbra Institute does not maintain tenured faculty. All applicants will be considered without regard to race, religion, color, gender, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation or veteran status.

NOTE: Please do not contact Arcadia University, the Universita’ per Stranieri di Perugia, or any other Umbra affiliate in regards to employment at the Umbra Institute. Instead, simply follow the instructions above.

We look forward to working with you to ensure that the Umbra Institute continues to offer exciting, challenging, and innovative learning opportunities to its students!
