Umbra Co-Op Opportunities
The Umbra Institute is pleased to offer Cooperative Education Opportunities (Co-Op) with local community partners for students from American colleges and universities. These full-time, compensated internships have been developed as part of our commitment to community engagement and active learning. The benefits of a co-op work experience are many. Students gain practical work experience in areas that complement their personal strengths, interests, and educational needs. The experience also helps students gain new perspective on their career choices and develops the marketable skills necessary for entry and success in the workplace.
Who Can Apply?
Students from all majors and academic backgrounds are welcome to apply. The only pre-requisites for most positions are enthusiasm, an open mind, flexibility, and the desire to work in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment. For all placements, some knowledge of the Italian language will greatly enhance the Co-Op experience. Students with a background in Italian and an academic concentration or major which matches the expertise of the Co-Op partner will be given preference for placement.
Study Abroad and Co-Op Experience
International Co-Ops require advance planning and preparation. At the Umbra Institute, we strongly believe that both students and employers have a more rewarding Co-Op experience when a semester of study abroad precedes the employment experience. Studying abroad allows students to earn transferable credits, acquire language and cultural competency, and acclimate to the new environment. The skills, knowledge, and cultural understanding gained during a semester or summer session in Italy can then be directly applied during the Co-Op period.
Students may choose between the Two Semester Program (8 months) or the One Semester Program (6 months).
Two Semester Program – Fall Study Abroad Semester & Spring Semester Co-Op
This program requires 8 months in Italy from September to April with a holiday break. During the Fall semester (September-December), students will study full-time at the Umbra Institute in the General Studies Program, Direct Enrollment Program at the University for Foreigners, or Direct Enrollment Program at the University of Perugia. After the semester of study at the Umbra Institute students may return home for the holidays or remain in Italy. After the new year the 4-month Spring Co-Op employment period begins (January-April). Students will work full-time with the chosen employer. Exact start and end dates and schedule will vary according to the individual employers.
One Semester Program – Italian Language Preparatory Course and Spring Co-Op
This program requires 6 months in Italy from January through June. Upon arrival students will be placed in an intensive two-month, non-credit bearing preparatory Italian language course at the University for Foreigners with weekly tutorial meetings with an Umbra Italian faculty member (January-February). When the course concludes, students will begin their 4-month Co-Op experience (March-June).
