For Italians of both sexes, the expression “la bella figura” (translation: the beautiful figure) reveals the high value placed upon one’s personal image, behavior, comportment, and movement style. DHIR 210 explores this concept in the daily cultural life of Italians, both historically and today in Perugia, and links it to the values embedded in the studied movement practices of 15th century Italian Renaissance court dancing. In this course, students will be introduced to the truly innovative concepts of principal Renaissance dance masters, artists, and philosophers whose ideas and creations shaped the contemporary forms of dance, ballet and modern dance, that we love today.
Course activities are designed to encourage students to find a fresh approach to movement studies in order to refine their own expressive potential. Such activities include:
- regular observations in the “classroom” of Italian cultural movement style;
- a field trip to the Uffizi Gallery and Boboli Gardens in Florence;
- performing simple yet challenging court dances, ballet barre exercises;
- creative exploration of your own voice through choreography;
- several master classes with an internationally renowned expert in Italian Renaissance dance.
At the end of the semester, a culminating group project (dance video) will be shown at the Umbra Art Show.
- Embody style of 15th century Renaissance court dances along with the related writings of Renaissance philosophers, artists and dance masters
- Acquire a more critical eye to appreciate various dance movement styles, artistic expressions and choreographic and musical structures
- Improve versatility and proficiency of movement through regular practice of new vocabularies of movement and anatomical study
- Create original and engaging dances via improvisational games and structured choreography
- Research an area of personal interest related to the course and perform in a culminating group video project
