Welcome Marymount students! Last summer a group of MMC students had the opportunity to live and study in Italy, completing courses that fulfilled major or general education requirements while taking advantage of the Umbra Institute’s incredible location in Perugia, Italy. MMC students studied with MMC professor Peter Naccarato, who taught “Mangiamo: Food in Italian Literature and Film.” Prof. Naccarato and his students studied a wide range of literary texts and films that explore how food shapes Italian culture and identity. The course included a fantastic visit to the shop and restaurant of Dario Cecchini, the “Butcher of Chianti”. In addition, MMC students had ample time on weekends to travel elsewhere in Italy and Europe, from Rome, Florence, Venice, and Naples to a weekend trip to Barcelona, Spain. Are you ready to experience Perugia for yourself?
Academics. MMC students can earn 3 or 6 credits. They can choose to take only Prof. Naccarato’s class or they can add a second 3-credit course for no extra charge. Prof. Naccarato can help students determine what MMC requirements these course could fulfill and MMC’s Study Abroad staff is available to help with the required paperwork. The 2014 summer session lasts 5 weeks, from the end of May through June. Courses are taught in English, so no Italian language proficiency is required. Courses meet twice a week, with no classes on Fridays.
Student Life. The Umbra Institute hosts between 100 and 150 American and Italian college students each semester from colleges & universities across the U.S. and in Perugia. Housing is provided for all students in shared apartments within a 5-minute walk of the Institute. There is no meal plan, but apartments are furnished with full kitchens. They also have WiFi access and wireless internet is provided for free at the Umbra Institute and in many locations around Perugia.
