Summer Programs at Umbra
The Umbra Institute offers two programs each summer, the General Studies program where students choose their courses from a variety of electives, and the Intensive Italian Language through Culture program which is the by far the best way to learn and improve Italian proficiency for all levels. Students cannot do both and must participate in one or the other. Each program has its own set of specific arrival and departure dates so please check the academic calendar carefully for the program you choose.
Session I: The General Studies Summer Program
The General Studies Program runs from late May through June (5 1/2 weeks) and allows students to freely choose one or two courses from the diverse list of courses (including ITLN 101) offered each summer for a maximum of 8 credits. Visit our summer course page for offerings and our academic calendar for dates. Nearly all the courses have field trips and excursions as part of the curriculum. Beyond the courses you will find a variety of co- and extra-curricular activities such as socials, pizza nights, gelato nights and walking tours so you will always have something to do. We also offer an optional weekend trip to either Capri or Tuscan Farmhouse each summer. And for weekend travelers, we do not hold classes on Friday to allow for extended weekends so you can explore the many historical and picturesque cities in Italy and Europe.
Session II: The Intensive Italian Language Through Culture Summer Program
The second Umbra summer program is the “Intensive Italian Language though Culture Program” which runs for 6 weeks from the 1st of June through mid-July. This highly specialized program taught entirely in Italian and directed by Dr. Robert Proctor, Professor of Italian at Connecticut College. The program consists of full-time study coupled with a rich co-curricular cultural activities program. Activities such as cinema nights, language exchange sessions, lunches, socials, museum visits, and local tours in Italian complement the in-class learning process. Courses are offered at four different levels of Italian, ranging from the beginning level to the advanced. This is an excellent program for students who wish to learn and practice as much Italian as possible during the summer. Detailed information on this highly lauded and innovative program can be found here (Summer Intensive Italian Language through Culture Webpage) on the program’s dedicated web page.
We look forward to hosting you in Italy next summer! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@umbra.org for more information. We will be pleased to provide you with everything require.
