TRAP is an archaeological research project and undergraduate field school based in Castiglione del Lago, Italy. The project is a collaboration between The Umbra Institute (Perugia, IT), DePauw University (Indiana, US), The Comune of Castiglione del Lago, and The Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Umbria.
Since 2015, the TRAP team has conducted excavation at select sites in the territory of Castiglione del Lago. Our research goals include documenting the history of human occupation in the region, understanding the transition from the Etruscan to Roman period, and investigating the Roman use of the land. We have excavated at three distinct sites: a Roman villa near Gioiella, a manufacturing site at Ranciano, and we are currently digging a possible Etruscan Sanctuary and Roman bath complex on the south slope of Castiglione del Lago (Via Belvedere). For more information see: The Trasimeno Field School. In addition to the significant discoveries we have made so far, we are now working with the Comune of Castiglione del Lago to open an archaeological museum and conservation laboratory in the Palazzo della Corgna (TRAP Digital Museum). We eventually hope to make all our discoveries accessible to the public.
Your donation to TRAP allows us to continue our research program while providing an exemplary experience for U.S.-based undergraduate students. As the project has grown in its scope and significance, the costs of operating the field school, conducting the excavations, and preserving the archaeology have also increased. Your contribution allows us to continue our research without increasing the costs of the Trasimeno Field School for students. Help us educate future archaeologists while preserving and protecting the heritage of ancient Umbria.
