Perugia Is Ready to Celebrate San Costanzo: What You Need to Know

San Costanzo is the patron saint of Perugia, and every year at the end of January the city comes together to celebrate his life through religious ceremonies and cultural events. The official celebration takes place on January 29th, which is a public holiday for the entire Municipality of Perugia

Saint Constantius (San Costanzo) was the first bishop of Perugia. According to historical accounts, he was persecuted for his Christian faith during the Roman Empire and was eventually martyred for refusing to renounce his beliefs. His courage and devotion made him a lasting symbol of faith and protection for the city.

The Celebration of San Costanzo Today

On San Costanzo’s Day, key locations such as the Basilica of San Costanzo and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo host important religious services. At the same time, the city center becomes lively with fairs, music, and community events. Both locals and students are encouraged to take part, making it a perfect opportunity to experience Perugia’s traditions firsthand.

Torcolo di San Costanzo: A Sweet Tradition

One of the most loved traditions of San Costanzo’s celebration is the Torcolo di San Costanzo, a dessert closely linked to this feast day. The torcolo is a ring-shaped cake, made with simple ingredients such as flour, sugar, eggs, olive oil, raisins, and candied fruit.

The torcolo is baked in the oven, not fried. Its circular shape is symbolic and is traditionally associated with the martyrdom of San Costanzo. Every year, bakeries across Perugia prepare fresh torcoli, and families, friends, and students share it as part of the celebration.
